Who is Planning to Run a Marathon?

Don't laugh. These are all I have to start with...

I made the decision to run a marathon. I have a reason; Among other things, to prove I can do it. I also decided my first marathon will be the San Diego Rock ‘N’ Roll Marathon on May 31, 2009.

I told my wife at “0-dark-thirty” this morning we were going to San Diego in May. I also told her all I want for Christmas is some running shoes, and for my birthday in February, I want the $105 for the entry fee. I also told my boys, ages 14 and 12, of my plan.

As other parts of my blog mention, and as the name “GPdrums” implies, I play drums, primarily for worship bands. Well, this morning we lead worship for the men and women at the Bakersfield Rescue Mission–something we do the 3rd and 5th Sunday of every month.

We played half a dozen songs then a really neat guy with a past history including drugs and prison got up and did a short, encouraging sermon. This guy was speaking to me every bit as much as he was speaking to the homeless folks–God works through anyone and for the benefit of anyone who will receive His word.

The resounding message within the sermon was “Whose plan are you on? Yours or God’s?” I thought this was rather interesting, almost coincidental, being I had just made up my mind to run a marathon. I even announced my plan to my wife and kids and told everyone to plan on being in San Diego in May. But as I listened to this brother’s testimony, I was quickly convicted of never having submitted my plan to God–to ask for His permission, to ask for His blessing, and to ask for His help. This was a blunder on my part  considering I’ve been a Christian for a good 30 years or so. But as the speaker said today, “Thank God for mercy and grace–we can start new every day.”

So, here, publicly I  say this prayer: “Father in heaven, I have this plan to run a marathon in May. I pray foremost that Your will is done. If this is not Your plan or Your will, I ask You to close the door. However, if it is Your plan, or if You will permit me to carry out this plan, I pray for every blessing, for Your strength–both mental and physical, for Your wisdom in treating my body right, for safety and protection, and for You to guide my path–literally and figuratively–every step and stride of the way. This I pray in Jesus name, Amen!”

Though I’ve got a plan, my plan is now duly submitted to the Lord. It is now His plan. And tomorrow I will begin my first session at 0500 PST. This week’s plan is pretty straight forward: I will be using the 26 week plan from the Marathon Rookie website, but I will begin on week 4.  This week I will run/walk for 30 minutes on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday–rain or shine. That’s all I’m gonna focus on–I’m only 4 short training sessions away from a successful week.

San Diego, I here I come!
