Running Form for a Rookie

Posted in Marathon Training by gpdrums on December 24, 2008

I am now 50% closer to achieving this week’s goal, and I have achieved 2% of my overall goal.

I set the alarm for 0545, but  I didn’t budge for about 15 minutes. I knew I was going to run this morning; I was just a little tired from a head cold.

I felt the head cold coming on yesterday. It worried me because I want to stick to my training plan. I did a little research and learned about running when sick: Above the neck is okay to train, below the neck is not okay to train. No breathing problems for me… just a little more tired than usual.

I strutted off at 0605 for another 30 minute run/walk. Today I ran more than I walked I tried to stay focussed on form and pace. More than thinking about running and being tired, I was thinking:

don’t bob up and down, propel yourself forward, chest leads, heel to toe, and relax your arms...

I was so preoccupied with form, I forgot I was running. It was then that I realized I had a good pace and my breathing was a smoothe in in out out pattern.

Progress was made on today’s run. I just have to remember that I will be on a 30-35 minute run/walk training schedule for another 10 runs. After that, only running. But until then, I need to push without over-doing it so my body can properly adapt to the training.
